800px-Monument Valley Merrick Butte

Buttes are geographical landforms that have steep sides and a relatively flat top. Along with plateaus and mesas, these table-like landforms are not mistaken for. Different buttes are seen throughout North America.

Appearance

Buttes have relatively flat, narrow tops. The sides are fairly vertical and the structure is made of soft cock. Buttes are smaller than mesas, plateaus, and other table-like geographical features.

Buttes

Buttes are formed by erosion of geographical rock features such as mesas. Continued weathering and erosion causes buttes to get its shape.

The word butte comes from a French word meaning small hill.
